Taurian Fontenette
1983 — November 2, 2026
Texas
Taurian Fontenette died on November 2, 2026 in Texas. No official cause of death has been released. Readers are working out what happened on this page.
Taurian Fontenette grew up in Hitchcock, Texas, a small town on the road to Galveston, played college ball at UTEP, Richland and Paul Quinn, and was working security at a chemical plant when he went to an AND1 Mixtape Tour tryout in 2005. He was there to play against the team. He dunked so hard and so often that they put him on it, and the announcer gave him the name he kept for the rest of his life: Air Up There.
In 2006, in front of a home crowd at the Toyota Center in Houston, he spun twice in the air in the middle of a game and finished. It was billed as the first documented in-game 720, it made SportsCenter's top ten, and for a lot of kids who grew up on streetball tapes he became Mr. 720. His other signature, the Axle-Rider, was a full 360 with the ball passed between his legs before the finish. After AND1 he played on the Ball4Real tour and, in 2009, for the Dallas Generals of the ABA.
He was 43. A fellow dunker, Chuck Millan of Team Flight Brothers, called him arguably the greatest dunker who ever lived.

Nothing is known yet; the family hasn't said, and that is their call
No cause has been announced, and no official has said anything. Anything more specific than that, right now, is a guess about a man whose family is grieving. If you have something real, a statement or a source, add it. Otherwise the honest answer this week is that we don't know.

When the family confirms the cause, the confirmed answer moves to the top and gets this mark. Theories stay, but are labeled as what people thought before the family knew.
When a family announces a death without a cause, it often just means they haven't chosen to share it, or are waiting themselves: an autopsy, if there is one, and the toxicology that goes with it, can take weeks to months. Silence in the first days is not a sign of anything.
If you knew him and know what happened, or the family releases a statement, add it as a theory with where it came from, and it will rise if readers find it credible.
