Privacy and removal
Short version: we collect almost nothing about you, and if you are family and want a page gone, it goes.
If you are family
You can have any page about your person corrected or removed. You don’t have to explain why.
Open the page, use the Correct or remove this page link at the bottom, choose “I am family and I want this page removed,” and leave an email. The page is hidden from the home page and from search engines the moment you send that. A person then deletes it, normally within 48 hours, and emails you to say so.
If you would rather keep the page but fix it (the dates, the story, a theory that is cruel or wrong), use the same link and say what should change. If you know the cause of death and want it confirmed on the page, say that too.
Photos: if a photo on a page is of you or your family member and you want it removed, report it from the page. It comes down.
You can also write to hello@ohbit.org.
What we remove without being asked
Theories or pages that are cruel, invented, or name a private individual as responsible for a death. Specific doses, methods, or combinations of drugs. Pages about a death under active criminal investigation. Pages about a suicide not made by family. Photos that are not of the person, or that were posted to mock. Anything that reads as a threat.
Theories on Ohbit are theories. A theory with many “likely” marks is one that many anonymous readers find plausible, and nothing more. Nothing here is a medical, legal, or official finding. Only a cause confirmed by the family carries a mark of authority, and even that is the family’s word, not ours.
What we collect about you
No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for. We set one cookie, a random ID for your browser, so that you can vote once per theory and light one candle per person per day. It is not linked to your name, email, or anything else, and it is not shared with anyone.
What you write is anonymous. Theories, votes, and candles are stored with that random ID only. If you describe yourself (“a hospice nurse”), we show it and we don’t check it. If you make a page, we give you a private link to manage it; keep it, because there is no other way to prove it was you.
Reports. If you leave an email on a report, we use it to reply to you about that report and for nothing else.
Photos. Location data and other hidden metadata are stripped from every photo before it is stored. Photos are public on the page. By adding one, you say you have the right to share it.
Analytics. We count page views with a privacy-preserving tool that does not use cookies or track you across sites. We do not sell data, show ads, or share anything with advertisers.
Hosting. The site runs on Vercel, and the database is on Turso. They see what any web host sees: the requests the site serves.
Copyright and photos
Portraits on pages we made ourselves are public domain or licensed for reuse, with the credit shown under each. Photos added by readers belong to whoever took them. If a photo on Ohbit is yours and you did not post it, report it from the page or write to hello@ohbit.org with the page link; it comes down.
