How did Presley Gerber die?

Presley Gerber

July 2, 1999 — September 20, 2026

Santa Monica, California

Presley Gerber died on September 20, 2026 in Santa Monica, California, aged 27. No official cause of death has been released. Readers here find the most likely explanation to be: an accidental overdose, as police suspect, during a period when the risk is highest (31 of 37 find it likely).

Presley Walker Gerber was born at home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, the first child of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, and grew up in Malibu with his younger sister, Kaia. He signed with IMG Models at fifteen, walked his first runway for Moschino at sixteen, and spent his late teens working for Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. In 2017 the readers of Models.com voted him the breakout male model of the year. He was twenty-seven when he died.

He was more public than most people in his position about the parts of his life that weren't going well. Starting in 2023 he talked on podcasts and in a social media series he called Mental Health Mondays about depression and a long struggle with addiction, and about stepping away from people in the industry to look after himself. He said that if he helped one person or a hundred get out of the place he'd been, that was all he needed to do. In June 2026 he spoke on a mental-health panel in Malibu with his mother in the audience. He had been in treatment again in the months before he died.

He is survived by his parents and his sister.

The record

What is established, from the authorities and the people who were there.

On the morning of Sunday, September 20, 2026, a call for a cardiac arrest came in at 9:35 a.m. from a residential treatment facility on the 1000 block of Berkeley Street in Santa Monica, according to dispatch recordings reported by several outlets. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 9:45 a.m. He was 27.

A representative for his family confirmed the death and said: "The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time."

The Santa Monica Police Department said it was investigating the death as a suspected overdose and that there was no indication of foul play. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy but, as of early November, has not released a cause or manner of death. Toxicology results, which usually decide cases like this, have not been made public.

Police suspect an overdose, the autopsy is done, and the medical examiner still hasn't ruled. His family has asked for privacy, and so does this page. What is known about what happened that Sunday morning, and what is the county waiting for?

An accidental overdose, as police suspect, during a period when the risk is highest

This is what the police said and what the dispatch call pointed to. He had talked openly for years about addiction, and had been in treatment again. People in and around treatment are at their most vulnerable to an overdose, because the body's tolerance drops quickly once someone stops using, and a return to a familiar amount can be far too much. If the toxicology confirms this, it will be the most common way a 27-year-old in America dies, and nothing about it would make him or his family any less than they were.

Wait for the toxicology: the call was a cardiac arrest, and that can have more than one cause

The first call was for a cardiac arrest, and "suspected overdose" came later in the dispatch. A young person's heart can stop for reasons that have nothing to do with drugs, including rhythm problems that run in families and only show up once. An autopsy can find some of those, and toxicology rules the rest in or out. The medical examiner hasn't said, and the right answer for now is that nobody outside that office knows.

When the family confirms the cause, the confirmed answer moves to the top and gets this mark. Theories stay, but are labeled as what people thought before the family knew.

When a medical examiner finishes an autopsy but doesn't give a cause, it is almost always waiting on toxicology: the lab work that measures what was in the blood and in what amounts. In Los Angeles County that routinely takes two to four months, longer when the case is complicated. A "deferred" or "pending" cause is not a sign that anything is being hidden.

"Suspected overdose" is what first responders and police write when the scene suggests it; it is not a finding. The medical examiner's eventual ruling has two parts, the cause (what physically happened) and the manner (accident, natural, and so on), and they are often released together.
