How did Jim Morrison die?

Jim Morrison

December 8, 1943 — July 3, 1971

Paris, France

James Douglas Morrison was a Navy admiral's son who spent his childhood being moved between bases and his adulthood making sure nobody could move him anywhere. He studied film at UCLA, wrote poems in notebooks he carried everywhere, and formed a band on a beach in Venice with a keyboard player who had heard him sing one of them. He was twenty-seven when he died in a bathtub in Paris.

In the five years between, the Doors made six albums and he became the first rock singer anyone called a shaman without laughing. He was also arrested on stage in New Haven, convicted of indecent exposure in Miami, and was, by his final tour, heavy, bearded, and drinking in a way his bandmates had stopped pretending was a phase. He went to Paris in March 1971 to get away from all of it and write. He told people he was done with music.

He is buried in Père Lachaise, where the grave has had to be fenced off from the people who still come to leave bottles on it.

The record

What is established, from the authorities and the people who were there.

Official cause: Heart failure (French death certificate, July 1971). No autopsy was performed.

He was found dead in the bathtub of the apartment at 17 rue Beautreillis that he shared with Pamela Courson, in the early hours of July 3, 1971. Courson said she found him. A doctor who was called to the apartment signed a certificate giving the cause as heart failure. Under French law at the time, with no sign of foul play, no autopsy was required, and none was done.

The death was not reported for two days. He was buried at Père Lachaise on July 7 with five people present. By the time most of the world heard, he was in the ground. That gap, and the absence of an autopsy, is where every theory on this page comes from.

Courson, the only witness, gave versions of the night that did not entirely agree with each other, and died of a heroin overdose in 1974 without ever giving a full account.

In 2007 Sam Bernett, who had managed the Paris nightclub the Rock 'n' Roll Circus, published a book saying that Morrison had died in a toilet stall at the club of a heroin overdose on the night of July 2, and that his body had been carried back to the apartment and put in the bath by two dealers to keep the club out of it. Several people connected to the Paris scene have said versions of the same story. None of it has ever been checked against a body.

What happened

The family hasn’t confirmed a cause. These are the community’s theories, in the order the community finds them most likely. Everyone here is anonymous.

A doctor who never examined him alive wrote 'heart failure.' Nobody cut him open. He was 27. The one witness changed her story and then died. What happened in that bathroom, or before it?

He overdosed at home, in the bath, on heroin he took with Courson

The simpler version of the same thing. No club, no dealers, no body being carried through Paris at 5 a.m. He and Courson used that night, he got in the bath, his breathing stopped. She found him, panicked, waited, and called a doctor who would sign quickly. It fits every known fact with fewer moving parts than the club story, and it fits what happened to Courson three years later.

He overdosed on heroin, probably at the Rock 'n' Roll Circus, and was moved to the bathtub

This is Bernett's account and the one most people in the Paris scene have quietly agreed with for fifty years. Morrison wasn't known as a heroin user, but Courson was, and the story is that he snorted what he thought was cocaine. He collapsed in the club toilet, two dealers carried him out and back to the apartment, and he was put in the bath, which is where overdose victims were sometimes placed in the hope that cold water would revive them. It explains the two-day silence, the fast burial, the absence of an autopsy (nobody wanted one), and Courson's shifting story. What it lacks is anything you could check.

His heart gave out: years of heavy drinking, asthma, and a bad cough he'd had for weeks

The official cause, taken seriously. He'd been drinking enormously for years, had coughed up blood in Paris, and was overweight and short of breath. A man like that can die of a cardiac event in a hot bath with no drugs involved at all. The certificate may simply have been right, and everyone since has preferred a story with heroin in it because the ordinary explanation isn't good enough for Jim Morrison.

He didn't die: the closed coffin and the five mourners were the point

He had talked for years about faking his death and moving to Africa. The coffin was closed, almost no one saw the body, the burial was fast and nearly private. This has been a serious fan theory since 1971 and has no evidence of any kind behind it. It's on this page because it's part of the record of what people believed.

When the family confirms the cause, the confirmed answer moves to the top and gets this mark. Theories stay, but are labeled as what people thought before the family knew.

"Heart failure" on a certificate signed without an autopsy means almost nothing. It is the phrase a doctor reaches for when a young person is dead, there is no visible injury, and no one is going to look further. It is a description of the fact that the heart stopped, which is true of everyone.

What is medically consistent with being found dead in a warm bath at 27: an opioid overdose (breathing slows and stops; a bath is where people go when heroin makes them itch and feel cold), a heart rhythm failure in someone whose heart had been strained by years of heavy drinking, or a combination where a sedative slowed everything down and the hot water finished it. None of these can be told apart without an autopsy, which is the entire problem.
