How did Gene Hackman die?

Gene Hackman

January 30, 1930 — February 18, 2025

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Gene Hackman died on February 18, 2025 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, aged 95. The official cause of death was hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with advanced Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor; natural. Readers have raised 3 theories about how it happened.

Eugene Allen Hackman was born in San Bernardino, grew up in Danville, Illinois, watched his father drive away for good when he was thirteen, lied about his age to join the Marines at sixteen, and was voted, with his roommate Dustin Hoffman, least likely to succeed at the Pasadena Playhouse. He was ninety-five when he was found dead in the mudroom of his house outside Santa Fe, a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, had died in a bathroom down the hall, and nobody had known.

He won two Academy Awards, for The French Connection and Unforgiven, and should have had several more: The Conversation, Mississippi Burning, Hoosiers, The Royal Tenenbaums, Superman, in which he played Lex Luthor as a man who found the whole thing funny. He quit acting in 2004 after a stress test his doctor didn't like, moved to New Mexico, wrote novels, rode his bicycle, and was almost never photographed. He and Betsy, a classical pianist thirty-two years younger, had been married since 1991 and lived, by all accounts, extremely privately and extremely well.

He is survived by three children from his first marriage. Betsy is survived by her mother.

The record

What is established, from the authorities and the people who were there.

Official cause: Hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with advanced Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor; natural. Betsy Arakawa: hantavirus pulmonary syndrome; natural. (New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, March 7, 2025)

On February 26, 2025, maintenance workers who could not reach anyone at the house called security, who looked through a window and saw a body. Deputies found Betsy Arakawa, 65, dead on a bathroom floor, with pills scattered nearby, and Gene Hackman dead in the mudroom near the kitchen, with a cane and his sunglasses beside him. One of their three dogs was dead in a crate in a closet; the other two were alive. Both bodies showed signs of having been there for some time. There was no sign of forced entry or of a gas leak, and carbon monoxide was ruled out within days.

On March 7 the state's chief medical investigator announced the findings. Betsy Arakawa had died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease carried by deer mice, on or about February 11. Her last known activity was emails and a pharmacy visit on February 11; she did not answer a call from a clinic the next day. Gene Hackman died of heart disease, with advanced Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor, on or about February 18; his pacemaker's last recorded activity was that day. His stomach was essentially empty. The medical investigator said it was "quite possible" he had not been aware that his wife had died.

The pills near Arakawa were thyroid medication, unrelated to either death. The dog that died, a kelpie mix named Zinna, had been in a crate after surgery and died of dehydration and starvation. The deaths were ruled natural.

What happened

The cause of death has been confirmed. The theories below are how readers understand it, and what people thought before it was known. Everyone here is anonymous.

She died of a virus from mice on a Tuesday. He lived another week in the house with her body and probably didn't understand she was gone. What happened in that house, and could anyone outside it have known?

Heart disease and advanced Alzheimer's, a week after the only person caring for him died

The medical investigator's finding. His heart was in a state that could have stopped any day. His mind was in a state where he could not understand that Betsy had died. For about a week he was alone in the house with her, probably not eating, probably not taking his medication, and his heart gave out. The investigator said he likely never knew. Most people reading this find that the hardest fact on the page.

Betsy's death from hantavirus is the cause of both deaths

Not a different medical finding; a different way to read it. She was the caregiver. The virus she breathed in while cleaning an outbuilding killed her in a few days, and her death removed the only thing standing between him and his own. On this reading the mice killed two people. Investigators found nests in the garages and sheds.

Isolation: two people so private that no one noticed for sixteen days

Nobody checked. Not a neighbor, not a friend, not a service, for more than two weeks. The medical facts are settled; what this reading points at is that a famous man and his wife could die a week apart and be found only because a maintenance worker couldn't get an answer. The question for readers isn't what killed them. It's what the gap says.

Something environmental in the house, carbon monoxide or a leak

The first theory everyone had, with two people and a dog dead in one house. Investigators tested for carbon monoxide and gas within days and found nothing. The dog died of being crated with no one to let it out. It is on this page because for about a week it was what the whole country believed.

The confirmed cause carries this mark and stays at the top. Theories can still be added; they sort below it.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome comes from breathing in particles of dried mouse droppings or urine, often while cleaning a shed, garage, or outbuilding. It starts like flu and, in roughly four in ten cases, progresses within days to the lungs filling with fluid. There is no specific treatment; survival depends on intensive care. It kills a handful of people in the United States each year, most of them in the rural Southwest. Investigators found rodent nests in several outbuildings on the property.

Advanced Alzheimer's disease means the loss of the ability to understand what is happening, to recognize that a person is not responding, to use a phone, or to remember to eat. A 95-year-old with that disease, dependent on a spouse for everything, whose spouse stops moving, has no way to raise an alarm. His heart disease was severe enough to kill him on its own; a week without his wife, likely without food, and without his medication, brought that forward. The medical investigator was careful to say he probably never knew.
